Face Shots and Rocks!
That is what this early season powder day had for us. The weather was cold and crisp, but the sun came out for a bit and there was no wind (always a treat in RMNP). Touring with good friends, getting our ski stoke on! Thanks guys, till next time…

Mud, Snow, and Cowbells
Here are some images from Sunday’s Final Boulder Cyclocross Series. Definitely, one of the most exciting sports I have ever photographed. I think I might have to try this out next season. An incredible day of mud, snow, and cowbells.

The Bee Year
I recently started a project photographing Bees and more specifically Mead-making. I have been collaborating with a friend Mark Beran of Medovina, Colorado Honey Wine. Medovina is a small one man operation in Niwot, CO. Mark and I have been discussing the plight of Bees, their interconnection to this natural world and how mead-making has the potential to help to grow a demand for honey and an...

Running Centennial Cone
I know, I know, more running… But I think I have gotten it out of my system for the time being. Photographed Sarah and Christi at Centennial Cone. The light ended up being pretty poor, but Sarah and Christi were a blast to work with. Thanks to both of you for all your help!

More Running...
Yes, more running…just can’t help myself Boulder has been so green this summer. Its been a photographers dream. It rains almost every afternoon making the grasses remain green and the flowers are continue to bloom. Enjoy this shot of my friend Blake on the Spring Brook trail.

Running with Fee
I finally caught up with Fee Docherty, world class triathlete and runner, the other evening in Boulder. We did a quick photo shoot and then she was off to the Quebec Marathon. I hope to shoot more of Fee soon. She has an amazing stride, which looks so good through the camera.

Trail Running
I have been working on some trail running shoots lately, but its been so dry this spring! I have been scouting out locations and everything just looks brown. We need one of those big spring storms to come and turn things green around here. In the meantime I photographed my friend Emily trail running out at Boulder Reservoir the other evening.
Perfect Riding Weather
We have had some beautiful warm weather here in Boulder. Last week we hit 70 degrees! I’m actually a little scared…we have had a really dry winter and I worry about what the summer might hold. My friend Tony and I went out and explored a new trail the other day. The afternoon light was pretty flat for shooting, but I think we made the best of it.

Photoshoot with Ben Cook
Spent the other evening working on a personal project photographing my friend Ben who’s a custom welder. I have been working on a series of environmental portraits mainly of friends and their unique jobs or talents. Ben’s email signature says it all, “one man welding the world together.” I love it! Ben could very well do just that!
To view more photos from the shoot go...

Kurt and Luke
My Brother and his family were in Denver for a couple days this week. It was great to see each other and catch up on things. Leighanne was lecturing at a conference for the day, so we left 3 month old Luke in charge of the days activities and boy did he pack it full! I took some shots at the hotel. I like how the intimate relationship between father and son are juxtaposed against the Denver...
Blogging Ketchup
My apologies to the two of you who actually follow my blog. (there may be more…) I haven’t been up to writing much lately. So I am using this afternoon to catch up on a couple blogs I’ve been meaning to post. One is the last post I back-dated on Jackal Hut Bliss.
I have been pre-occupied lately. I was recently laid off from my “other job” as a graphic designer and...

Jackal Hut Bliss
Hut skiing in Colorado is definitely one of my favorite things. There are a few qualities in life that when combined together make bliss, and hut skiing can be one of those. Maybe its the mountain views, crisp days, snow, or good friends, a warm hut, exercise, sunrises, and good food. Or maybe its just getting away from our modern day distractions. Jackal Hut sits on a semi-gladed ridge facing...
Berthoud Pass, CO
Fritz and I ventured up to Berthoud pass on a hunch Sunday hoping to find some fresh snow. January has been a little hit or miss compared to December’s snow accumulations in the front range. We figured a day in the backcountry would be refreshing whether there was a lot of new snow or not. As we drove towards the pass we broke through the clouds to see the sun rise and a perfect blue-sky...

-10 Fahrenheit last night… Our old house had beautiful ice patterns on the windows this morning.
Turning Point
Got out to photograph my friend bouldering Turning Point (V9) the other day. It was a cold, crisp, Saturday before Thanksgiving and the “turning point” in the season before the snow arrived. I spent my time between spotting my friend and taking some photos. Turning Point is such a cool looking formation. It sits on top of a giant rock platform hidden in the woods between the 2nd and...

Aurora Photos Action:Reaction Project
Recently I participated in a photo project called Action:Reaction a part of Aurora Photos 15 year Anniversary of being in business as a stock agency. The Action:Reaction project has been in progress since June 2008 and the basic concept is that every 48 hours a new image is uploaded to the site that somehow relates to the previous image. It is a very interesting progression of images by an...
For All
Ah to be alive on a mid-September morn fording a stream barefoot, pants rolled up, holding boots, pack on, sunshine, ice in the shallows, northern rockies. Rustle and shimmer of icy creek waters stones turn underfoot, small and hard as toes cold nose dripping singing inside creek music, heart music, smell of sun on gravel. I pledge allegiance I pledge allegiance to the soil of Turtle Island,...
Fall in Colorado
Fall has always been my favorite time of the year. The cool of nights, frosty mornings, the changing of colors, crisp days, long shadows. But it always seems to be elusive to me. In a perfect world I would take 3 weeks off in March to ski and 3 weeks off in October to climb. It never seems to be that simple…
This Fall has been about exploring what local Colorado has to offer. Four months out...

Hiking in the Maroon Bells
A couple weeks ago I spent a few days with some friends of the family in Gothic, Colorado, home of the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory. Krehe and Kathy Ritter have been working at the lab for years. Spending summers outside doing extensive field research in the high altitude mountain air surrounded by abundant wildflowers and craggy peaks. Don’t get me wrong, its not at all easy. They...

Rain finally comes to Colorado
With over two weeks of temperatures hovering near the triple digits the heat was starting to take its toll on me. Fortunately, the rains finally arrived in Boulder and everyone I met while on the trails, echoed my thoughts and sighed in relief.
Hiking has become my primary mode of exercise since shoulder surgery and by Sunday I was itching for another adventure. That afternoon I drove up to...

Boulder hits 100º
So, its been 6 weeks since rotator cuff surgery and I have been slowly gaining back the use of my left arm, and I mean slow, painfully slow. In P/T I am started to do some strengthening exercises with thera-bands and of course I over did it in true Levensaler form. Today I am so sore I can barely lift my arm up to the keyboard.
Anyway, enough of that! Boulder has been reaching close to 100...

torn supraspinatus
I stopped climbing completely about 2 months ago after the doctor confirmed my dreaded suspisions. The MRI revealed a 6mm tear in the supraspinatus tendon, a frayed bicep tendon, bone spurs, and a deformity on the acromion. Wear and tear from 15 years of climbing.
So meanwhile I have taken a backseat to climbing and started carrying in the camera gear instead of climbing gear. Its been...
